Somewhere That's Green


Will you help me bring green to Grey?  Please keep praying for this project.  Green brings fruit and cleaner waters and a sense of hope. Bubba...

I bought these hand woven pots to give the plants a base for roots. 



It has taken me almost 3 weeks to observe the environment and community, assess the biological life for my purposes, acclimate and gather tools!  Today, I am at the sight where I begin building green (nothing political in my usage of the word green - only Biblical!).  Green, by God's economy brings the beauty and life of spring.   

  • build a small (yet expandible) hydroponic system called the Silas Wall to bring a vision of green and economic potential.  I have several designs for the Silas Wall. 2 days
  • Build a cistern - this will be a longer term project because I have to design and build a guttering system to catch the water that the poor can copy. I will likely weave this project in and out of the other projects. 2 weeks?
  •  Organize Water Filter distribution and cooperative for growth.  Filters arrive in the next week.  Finish stella model on the cooperative model for distribution.  2 to 3 weeks.  
  • Expand the small Silas wall into a larger system of Aquaculture for the dry season of growth (Feb. - Apr.).  The system should have two seasons of operation - dry season (brakish Lagoon) and the rest of the year (fresh waters).  My whole time in Makoko.
  • Find Hunsa and Sesi and figure out plan for them.  ?

  Summery of Work in  Makoko  by Jack and friends: 1.        We created a missionary apartment that has 1600 watts of solar power with two strong batteries.  There has been a missionary scheduled to come and work with the  Makoko  people in December, and others have shown interest.  So pray that more and more Christians will continue to go to  Makoko  and invest in the beautiful people who live there. 2.       We proved that aquaponics can clean the waters of  Makoko while producing foods - with a working model.  This concept proof means that people can be expanded among the people.  So pray that a missionary would go and organize the food production.  In my view, aquaculture could transform the community into a destination spot in the world as it would turn the grey and bleak green with plants and cleaned canal waters.  But having a vision and spreading a vision has always been my Achillis-Heal   I will begin conversations with the University of Lagos about a partnership of aquacultur

Let's Clean it! Stage One...

 I have a three stage plan to clean the waters of Makoko - this is stage one!  We start growing food and cleaning the water at the same time.  This is a solution that costs very little with great payback in fresh food and health.  The above system would cost approximately 50 dollars.  The plants grow great in this tropical environment! We would begin to stretch the system in the canals that bring Lagos pollution into Makoko.  This would mean that we would be producing loads of fresh food throughout the city!  Those who cooperatively yield the fruit for the people, the people would in turn maintain their portion of the system! Train the New Guy!

 The new guy (Gahdi - in white) asked if I would teach him plants.  So I asked Solomon to work with Gahdi on the aquaculture system.  Solomon (in colorful outfit) came up with a new design for the system that is stronger and has double rows of plants.  This is good that he is thinking about better ways of building - that is the nature of aquaculture!  I love plants and I love to work with people who want to learn plants.  The fish are OK, but I do it for the plants.  The people here have rarely seen a live plant in their community and then to see the plants connected to living fish blows their minds!  However, it's still too leaky but they will learn that over time.  Rome was not built in a day!  And, I learned as a teacher to back off and let them learn life lessons that stick with them.  Another life lesson is that they got so excited, they went and got a new bunch of plants before the system is up and running.  Do you notice the plants are suffering?  This is how we learn...
